99% of what? (307,000,000 x 99% = 303,930,000 Americans)
When the United States started putting "In God We Trust" on its currency, Mark Twain quipped, "It couldn't sound better if it were true."
The Occupy movement has adopted the phrase "We are the 99 percent"; meaning, Occupy represents everyone that is not part of the 1% - the rich, elite, greedy, and corrupt.
I submit to you that it couldn't sound any better if it were true.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, this country would be 99% Caucasian. Where are all the blacks and Asians?
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, I would run across many people, on a daily basis, that support "Socialist Workers of America."
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, only about 3 million Americans would understand the difference between a Democracy and a Republic.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, skull caps, hoodies, baggie pants and hipster beards would be haute couture.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, Taco Bell would be haute cuisine.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, Democracy would truly "look like" what it is and what we are seeing - mob rule. We would be seeing mob rule in every town in the country.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, our country seems to have an average age of 22 years old and is white, angsty, and male...with some beard growth.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, Sociology degrees would be more popular than Business Administration degrees. How dare you major in Business! If this movement's ideas were really representative of most Americans, I suspect Business Administration would be dropped as a degree choice due to lack of interest. Instead it is the most popular college degree.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, sales of an alternate universe Parker Brothers game "Wealth Redistribution" would dwarf some obscure, dementedly strange game called "Monopoly".
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, it would not have been statistically possible for me to see thousands of shoppers along Chicago's Magnificent Mile last night shopping at such evil conglomerate retail clothiers like Macys, Nordstroms, and Water Tower Place.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, why are Walmarts packed to the gills with shoppers? Walmart is "evil corporate greed" personified. If the 99% were the 99%, Walmart would have virtually no shoppers.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, why does my local middle class gas station sell high priced Evian, Pellegrino, and Fiji Water?
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, why does my local Walgreens have huge endcap sales display of expensive Godiva, Lindors, and Rocher chocloate truffles? The 99% I hear about just wouldn't have that disposable income for exotic candy.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, the Rachel Maddow Show would be wildly popular instead of some fringe, wacko show with 6 lesbian viewers.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, the economic engine of the country that made it the marvel of the world would not exist. We would be the People's Republic of Amerika.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, no one would by paying the bill for the free WIFI available around Zuccotti Park.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, Mother Jones would outsell Time Magazine
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, I would be dodging human feces on the sidewalk on a daily basis.
If the so called 99% were what they claim to be, this would not be a country I'd care to live in. Luckily, this claim of being the "99%" is worth no more than the filth and trash this cavalcade of human debris leaves in its wake. I know that the real majority in this country sits back quietly, with a bit of disgust, and sees these brats for what they are: spoiled, angst-ridden, Generation X and Y stooges deluding themselves. At best, they are Americans exercising their free speech rights. At worst, they are disgusting NeoMarxists advocating violence (that is what the Guy Fawkes meme is all about) whether they understand what that means or not.
Two things are very clear to me about these people: They are caught up in Groupthink, crossing the intersection of mob mentality, and are accomplishing nothing as evidenced by this comment from an #OWS supporter on Twitter:
@MMFlint: What would you like to see Occupy Wall Street accomplish? Tweet your ideas! #ows”
Second, It is very apparent Lord of the Flies is not required reading of any Occupy organizer or protester; its just a matter of time for distastrous results.
99 percent? Couldn't sound any worse if it were true to me.
